THE 1619 PROJECT
One Story Up
PROJECT LEAD - ANIMATION - DESIGN - TOOLKIT DEVELOPMENT & IMPLEMENTATION
I spent most of 2022 working with the team at Block & Tackle, developing and executing the supporting graphics for the 1619 Project Documentary Series on Hulu. Collaborating closely with show-runner Shoshana Grey and the team at One Story Up, our team developed the visual language for the entire series and executed the production of all the supporting graphics.
Acting in a leading role for the project, I helped to develop a cohesive animation language, and was also at the center of our efforts to establish a system for handling hundreds of deliverables through building multiple toolkits, organizing assets and resources, and guiding the work of designers and animators.
A comprehensive synopsis of the project can be found on Block and Tackle's website.
Toolkit Elements
The toolkits we developed were a significant part of the animation package. I played a central role in animating, building, and overseeing the implementation of the toolkits. The most involved element was the photo animations which we divided into two sections with unique treatments. Many of the topics were explored within the context of Nikole Hannah-Jones' family. For that, we developed our "family archival" treatment. The "historical archival" treatment covered the rest.
